Zucchini Bake: Easy Savoury Zucchini Cake

Step-by-step method

Let’s cook

At a glance

You're making a hearty savory zucchini cake that's been passed down through generations in Czech families—think of it as a springtime comfort food packed with smoked meat, cheese, and fresh herbs. The prep work involves grating zucchini, chopping meat and cheese, then mixing everything together with eggs and flour before baking for about 50 minutes until golden. It's a simple, forgiving recipe that works beautifully with spring ingredients like wild garlic or nettles, making it a fun twist on traditional Easter sides.

About this recipe

You might know this zucchini bake under a different name. At our house it was baked by my grandmother, then my mum, and my friends make it too. Everyone uses roughly the same ingredients, though sometimes with little twists. My favourite time to bake it is in spring, when wild garlic is in season – I always throw in a generous handful. Nettles and other spring herbs work brilliantly too. In fact, you can bake this instead of the traditional Easter stuffing.
