The fridge drain is that small hole in the back wall of the fridge compartment that carries away defrost water — and when it clogs up, you'll know right away: water pooling at the bottom, odd smells, and a higher electricity bill. The good news is that cleaning it takes just a few minutes with things you already have at home. In this guide, I'll explain what the drain does, how often to clean it, how to do it step by step, and how to stop it clogging again.
The fridge drain is a small hole in the back wall of the fridge compartment that carries away defrost water — without it, water would simply build up at the bottom. Here's how it works: as the compressor cools the fridge, moisture in the air condenses on the cold back wall and freezes. Once the compressor switches off, the wall warms slightly, the ice melts, and the water runs down a groove into the drain hole. From there it travels through a tube into a tray above the compressor, where residual heat evaporates it.
The whole system is maintenance-free — right up until the hole gets clogged with crumbs, gunk, or ice. Then the water has nowhere to go, and that's when problems start.
A blocked drain shows up in three ways: water pooling at the bottom of the fridge, musty or mouldy smells, and higher energy use. Each one is easy to fix with a bit of regular maintenance before it turns into a bigger repair job.

Odours and mould – bacteria and mould thrive in the warm, damp gunk that builds up in the hole. Besides the unpleasant smell, they speed up food spoilage; if you're also dealing with a smell coming from behind the fridge, this is often the root cause.
Higher energy use – according to manufacturers and repair technicians, excess moisture inside forces the compressor to work harder to maintain temperature, which shows up on your electricity bill.
Rinse and check the drain roughly every three to four months; for a busy family fridge, do it more often. A quick visual check — just to see if the hole looks blocked — is worth doing monthly, ideally while you're wiping down the shelves anyway. If you often store fruit, vegetables, or warm leftovers, there's more moisture around and the hole clogs faster.
To clean your fridge drain you'll need cotton swabs, vinegar, baking soda, a bulb syringe, and a microfibre cloth. You've probably got all of this at home already, and together it'll only take a few minutes:
Cotton swabs or a thin brush (an old toothbrush works too) for cleaning out the narrow hole.
Vinegar mixed with lukewarm water in a 1:1 ratio as a natural disinfectant against bacteria and odours.
Baking soda – one tablespoon per 2 cups of warm water for rinsing, or a thicker paste for stubborn buildup.
A bulb syringe or a short length of rubber tubing to push the solution through the hole.
A microfibre cloth for drying, and rubber gloves to protect your hands.
You can use lemon juice instead of vinegar; a few drops of tea tree or lavender oil in the solution add a pleasant scent and boost the antibacterial effect.
Cleaning it takes six steps: switch off the fridge, remove the food and shelves, locate the drain hole in the back wall, clean it with a swab and vinegar solution, rinse and check the flow, then put everything back. Here's the detail:
Switch off and unplug the fridge. Unplug it for safety, and also to give any ice inside time to melt.
Remove the food, shelves, and drawers. This gives you access to the back wall. Ease off any frozen-on parts with lukewarm water rather than tugging them loose.
Locate the drain hole. On most fridges it's at the bottom of the back wall of the fridge compartment, usually just above the vegetable drawers. If you're not sure, check your model's manual.
Clean the hole. Use a cotton swab or thin brush to remove any visible gunk and crumbs. Then use a bulb syringe to push a vinegar-and-water solution (1:1) or a baking soda solution (one tablespoon per 2 cups of warm, not boiling, water) through the hole to clear out any buildup in the tube as well.
Check the flow. Pour a little water into the hole and watch whether it drains freely into the tray above the compressor. If not, repeat the cleaning.
Reassemble and plug back in. Dry the hole and surrounding area with a cloth, put the shelves and drawers back, plug the fridge back in, and return the food after a few minutes.

Water at the bottom almost always means a blocked drain hole. Wipe up the puddle, remove any visible debris, and flush the hole with warm water and vinegar; a bulb syringe helps. Also check the door seal — if it's not sealing properly, warm moist air gets in, condensation gets worse, and the system can't keep up with draining the water.
Ice building up around the hole happens when it's too cold inside or airflow is poor. Set the temperature to 3–4°C, clear some space around the fan on the back wall, and once the ice has melted, flush the hole. If ice keeps forming even after cleaning, the defrost heating element may be faulty — that's a job for a repair technician.

The most common culprit is a worn or loose door seal, which lets warm, moist air seep in and causes excess condensation. Check the seal, make sure shelves near the back wall aren't overcrowded, and confirm the temperature is set correctly; if water keeps appearing, the drain tube further down the system may also be blocked.
The cleaning itself takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Add time for any ice inside to melt and for the hole to dry after rinsing, so budget around half an hour in total once you factor in removing and putting back the food.
