Easy Cheese Straws
·Rolling out the pastry
Use puff pastry that comes ready-rolled on baking paper. Unroll the first sheet of puff pastry onto your work surface. Leave it on the baking paper it's wrapped in, smooth it out and spread it with mustard.
Adding the filling
Lay slices of cheese on top or sprinkle over grated cheese. You can also add your favourite spices or fresh herbs. Cover with the second sheet of puff pastry and press down lightly.
Cutting the dough
Cut into strips about 1.5 to 2 cm wide using a pizza cutter or a pastry wheel. Twist the strips into straws and arrange them on a baking tray lined with baking paper.
Final glaze
Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with flax or sesame seeds, or alternatively poppy seeds or coarse salt.
Baking
Bake in an oven preheated to 170°C until golden.
Tip
If you use sliced cheese, it will definitely ooze out of the straw, toast up and turn beautifully crispy. That's actually what makes these straws so good.
Serving tip
Enjoy them crunched up on their own, or serve with a bit of chilli jam.
